In order to play a good game of poker 6 to 7 players are preferable but not necessary. Even two players can play poker. There are poker games though that allow more than seven players while there are others that work better if there are only two players.

First off, the standard deck of cards is a 52-card pack with no jokers. The cards are ranked from high to low: A, K Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2. Some instances the value of A can be altered to be lower than the number 2 card. For the purposes of comparing hands though, all of the suits are equal in value.

Although poker is played for money it is more convenient to use chips as money replacements while playing. They’re usually labeled with numbers to denote their value and sometimes they’re coloured in white, red or blue. Players must buy the chips from the host, or the casino, first before playing poker. When the game is over they could take the chips that they have and have them converted to cash.

Here’s how a game of poker progresses:

  1. Players make an initial bet, if needed according to the rules of the game, by putting some of their chips on a common area which they call “pot” or “pool”.
  2. The dealer then deals the cards to the players.
  3. The players check their cards out, while concealing them from the other players, and place extra chips on the pot to increase their bets. All the other players should either put in their chips to increase their contribution to at least an equal amount or discard their cards and abandon any chips they have contributed to the pot. When players answer a bet with an equal amount of bets they are making a “call”. When players refuse to bet that is called a “fold” and they opt to discard the chips that they have placed previously in the pot.
  4. Players who do not fold are called active players. When all of the active players have given an equal amount to the pot, that signals the end of the betting round. Depending on the kind of poker played, further cards can be dealt or the players can still exchange some of their cards, after which another players go into another betting round, and so on and so forth.
  5. After the last betting round has ended, a showdown will commence and all of the active players have to show their cards, and the one with best hand will win the pot. If at any time only one active player is still playing he instantly wins the pot without having to display his cards.

The player’s aim is to win the pot and there are two ways to achieve this:

  1. Have the best hand at the showdown
  2. Persuade the other players to fold

It is this possibility that players can bluff their way into winning. Players can pretend to have the best hand so that other players will instead fold rather than put more chips in the pot and take a risk.
