Playing Poker

The history of poker is pretty varied with so many scholars claiming their account of the game’s history to be the accurate one while debunking other scholars’ theories. One theory is that poker started in ancient China where people there played a game that was very similar to the rules of poker. Another theory is that Persians invented the game when scholars found their ancient game, named As Nas, to be very similar to poker.
In 17th century France, a game called “Poque” was already being played and it too had some similarities to the modern-day poker. This French game was taken from a Spanish card game called “Primero”, in which players are dealt three cards each and in order to win they must employ bluffing or they must know how to read a bluff which are also the integral aspects in playing modern-day poker. This is why Primero is considered to be Poker’s mother.
Now how does one play poker? The rules may vary for each type of poker but the objective remains the same for any poker game: your hand must be better than the other player’s hand or at least should “look” like it’s better than the other player’s hand. The last part of that sentence implies something that all poker players should know and learn to be good at, but we’ll get to there later. For now, let’s move on to the basic rules of playing poker.
Rules of Poker
During a casual play, anyone can deal the cards but players are required to take turns after each game. In a casino the house dealer is the only one who could deal the cards. When a player gets his turn to deal the cards he is required to hand the cards, after he shuffles it, to the person sitting to his right to cut the it. After cutting the cards the dealer then deals the cards to the players in a clockwise direction. He will hand out one card at a time to each player until he gives them the required number of cards for the kind of poker that they are playing.
Usually, one or more players are required to make forced bets before the game begins. It could be an ante or a blind bet or maybe even both. Cards may be dealt face-up or face-down depending on the kind of poker they are playing. When the game starts players can start making bets and the game progresses with each betting round. Players with a bad hand can develop it by asking for an additional card or replacing the cards they previously had. At the end of a betting round, all the bets should be gathered in the central pot.
During a betting round a player can make a bet and if no one “calls”, or matches his bet, then that round ends and the person who made the bet wins the round. Usually, poker players make a bet when their hand is good but there are times when a player makes a bet even though his hand is very bad. What this player is trying to do is “bluff”. This means that he wants the other players to think that he has the best hand so that they would be intimidate enough to “fold” or not call his bet. Bluffing is one of the most important aspects of Poker because it is a very useful tool in winning the game even if the player’s cards are low in value.
There are different kinds of Poker and there are different ways on how to play each type. However, the basic rules of poker remain the same and as long as you know this you can play poker no matter what kind it is.
