Players will bet against the House who is represented by the croupier or dealer. The croupier is the only person who can spin the roulette wheel and he is responsible for the wagers and payouts. The European and French version of the roulette has 37 slots or pockets, which represent numbers 0 up to 36. The American version has 38 slots because it has a double zero slot along with slots for numbers 0 to 36.

Buying in

Each player gets different coloured chips so that when they place their chips on the layout one player won’t mix up his chips with someone else. If you win, you exchange your coloured chips with cash chips. You can differentiate cash chips from coloured chips with the value amount stamped on them.

To start the game, choose a number to bet on and place your chips on that number on the layout at the side of the roulette. After everyone has placed their bets the croupier will then spin the roulette wheel counter-clockwise and spin the “ball” clockwise on a circular track right above the pockets of the roulette wheel. The ball is a small white weighted ball or metal ball that is quite small. Before the croupier spins the wheel and the ball he says to all the players first, “no more bets.” This means that no one is allowed to place any bets on the layout anymore and no one is allowed to change their bets too.

When the ball loses momentum it will fall from its track and into one of the pockets on the roulette wheel. The pocket it falls into will determine who wins the bet, if it falls into a pocket with the number you placed a bet on then you win. And that basically is how to play roulette.

One thing you should keep in mind when you want to know how to play roulette is the percentages. When you are playing roulette the percentage of winning against the house with the European version is 2.7 per cent. With the American version you are playing against the house with a 5.26 per cent chance of winning. People base these percentages on how many slots there are for each version. The more slots there are the higher is the house advantage, which is why some players prefer the European version.
